A closed-up coral is one of the most worrying sights for a reefer — especially a coral that used to be full and extended and is now shriveled or retracted. The good news is that a closed coral is almost always sending you a signal, and once you learn to read it, you can usually fix the cause.

Water flow that's wrong for that coral. Too much flow blasts a coral and prevents it from extending; too little leaves it in stagnant water. LPS corals like hammers, torches, and frogspawn generally want gentle to moderate flow — if a torch is getting hit by a powerhead directly, it won't open. Reposition so the flow is indirect and the coral can sway gently, not whip violently.

Lighting that's too intense or too dim. A coral moved into much stronger light than it's used to will close and may bleach; one in too little light slowly starves. New corals especially need to be acclimated to your lighting gradually. If you recently raised your light intensity or moved the coral higher, that could be it.

Being bothered by neighbors. Corals wage chemical and physical warfare. A coral placed too close to an aggressive neighbor — or within reach of a wandering anemone or a sweeper tentacle — will retract to protect itself. Look closely at what's near the closed coral. Euphyllia (hammers, torches, frogspawn) have long sweeper tentacles that can sting corals a surprising distance away.

Pests or irritation. Inspect the coral closely for pests — flatworms, nudibranchs, or uninvited hitchhikers. Also check whether a hermit crab, snail, or fish is repeatedly bothering it. Sometimes a coral stays closed simply because something keeps physically pestering it.

Poor water quality. Elevated nutrients, the wrong nutrient balance, or generally degraded water can make corals unhappy. If multiple corals are closed at once, suspect a water quality or parameter issue rather than something specific to one coral.

How to diagnose it step by step

  1. Check what changed recently. Did you do a water change, add a coral, adjust lights, move a powerhead, or dose something? Recent changes are the usual trigger.
  2. Test your core parameters. Look at alkalinity, salinity, and temperature first — and look at the trend, not just today's number. A swing is more telling than a single reading.
  3. Watch the flow on that specific coral. Is it being blasted or sitting in dead water? Adjust accordingly.
  4. Look at the neighbors. Is anything close enough to sting or touch it? Give it space.
  5. Inspect for pests and pestering. Look closely, ideally after lights-out with a flashlight when some pests come out.
  6. Be patient after fixing. Once you correct the cause, corals can take days to weeks to fully recover and re-extend. Don't keep moving it around — that just adds more stress.

When multiple corals close at once

If several corals close simultaneously, stop looking for individual causes and look at the whole system. This almost always points to a parameter swing, a salinity or temperature problem, or a water quality issue affecting the entire tank.
