Keeping a healthy reef tank comes down to water chemistry. Corals and fish thrive within certain ranges, and drifting outside them — or worse, swinging in and out — is behind most reef problems. This guide lays out the key parameters, their ideal levels, and what each one actually does, so you know what you're aiming for and why.

One principle to keep in mind throughout: stability matters more than hitting a perfect number. A parameter held steady within range will always outperform one that bounces around chasing an ideal value.

The major parameters and their ideal ranges

Alkalinity (Alk): 8–9 dKH. Alkalinity is your tank's buffering capacity and one of the three parameters corals consume to build their skeletons. It's the one most worth watching closely because it's consumed quickly and swings easily. Pick a target in the 8–9 range and hold it steady.

Calcium (Ca): 400–450 ppm. Calcium is the second skeleton-building block. It's consumed alongside alkalinity, though it drifts more slowly. Keep it in the 400–450 range; it works hand-in-hand with alkalinity and magnesium.

Magnesium (Mg): 1250–1350 ppm. Magnesium keeps calcium and alkalinity in balance and available in the water. If your alkalinity and calcium won't hold steady no matter what you do, low magnesium is often the hidden culprit. Keep it around 1300 ppm.

Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity (about 35 ppt). This is the salt concentration of your water. Reef tanks want ocean-level salinity, around 1.025–1.026. Consistency matters — top off evaporated water with fresh (not salt) water so salinity doesn't creep up as water evaporates.

Temperature: 76–78°F. A stable temperature in the high 70s is ideal for most reef tanks. As with everything, stability beats the exact number — avoid swings, and protect against overheating in summer and crashes from heater failure.

pH: 8.0–8.4. pH naturally fluctuates a little through the day and night. Keeping it in the 8.0–8.4 range is healthy. Low or unstable pH can often be improved with better aeration, a refugium running an opposite light schedule, or addressing CO2 buildup in the room.

The nutrients: nitrate and phosphate

Nitrate and phosphate are the two nutrients that need careful balance. Too high feeds nuisance algae; too low (bottomed out at zero) starves corals and invites pests like dinoflagellates.

Nitrate (NO3): 5–10 ppm. A small, measurable amount of nitrate is healthy and feeds your corals. Zero nitrate is not the goal — it often causes pale corals and pest outbreaks.

Phosphate (PO4): 0.03–0.10 ppm. Like nitrate, a small measurable amount is healthy. Bottomed-out phosphate causes problems just like excess does. Keep it low but present.

The key with nutrients is that they should be balanced and present, not eliminated. Chasing zero on both is one of the most common beginner mistakes and leads directly to pale corals and dino outbreaks.

The ammonia and nitrite rule

Ammonia and nitrite: 0 ppm, always. Unlike nitrate and phosphate, these should always read zero in an established tank. Any detectable ammonia or nitrite means something is wrong — an incomplete cycle, an overstocked tank, a dead animal, or a crashed biological filter. If you ever see these above zero in a stocked tank, treat it as urgent.

How often should you test?

Early on, and whenever something seems off, test frequently — even daily for the consumed parameters like alkalinity. Once your tank is stable and you understand its consumption patterns, a weekly testing rhythm works for most reefers, with alkalinity sometimes checked more often since it moves fastest. The serious reefers test consistently and, crucially, record their results so they can see trends.

Why the trend matters more than the snapshot

Here's the thing that separates reefers who struggle from reefers who cruise: the ones who do well aren't just testing, they're tracking over time. A single reading tells you almost nothing. A reading in the context of the last month tells you everything — whether alkalinity is slowly declining as corals grow, whether nitrate is creeping up from overfeeding, whether something swung the day your corals got unhappy.
