Green hair algae — often shortened to GHA — is one of the most common frustrations in reef keeping. It creeps across your rocks, smothers corals, and seems to grow faster than you can pull it. What causes hair algae

  • Overfeeding. Too much food, or food that goes uneaten and decays, dumps nutrients into the water.

  • Old or dirty filter media leaching nutrients back into the water.

Light plays a supporting role — algae needs it to grow — but nutrients are the real fuel. You can't usually solve hair algae by reducing light alone; you have to cut the nutrient supply.

How to get rid of it, step by step

1. Manually remove as much as you can. Pull the algae out by hand and with a toothbrush or algae scraper. Do this during a water change so you can siphon out what you dislodge. Manual removal won't solve the root cause, but it dramatically reduces the algae's foothold and gives your other efforts a head start. Remove it outside the tank when possible so you're not just redistributing it.
